Dear Dreamland Skaters and Coney Lovers,

It breaks my heart to have to tell you this.

Dreamland Roller Rink will not be celebrating our third season inside the beautiful Childs Building in Coney Island.  To my surprise, I just found out that the owners of the building have decided not to allow Dreamland Roller Rink to continue illuminating their space with roller skating bliss!!   It is a shame not only for myself and the business I’ve built there, but also for the Coney Island and Roller Skating communities.  It was amazing to have this fabulous historical landmark building, which had been dormant and abandoned for so long, active and full of life.  I am afraid that now it will once again be boarded up and vacant for quite some time.

I am so sorry to disappoint you with this news.  I know that all of Dreamland’s fabulous skaters were counting down the days until our 2010 season began.  I had so many amazing classes, costumes, and parties planned for Dreamland’s 2010 season, and am heartbroken that we will not have the chance to share these events with you.

Many exciting things are happening in Coney Island this summer, and it is very sad that Dreamland Roller Rink will not be there to contribute to the magic!  A new amusement park, Luna Park, is opening on Memorial Weekend; the Ringling Bros Circus is returning, and more.  It feels as though Coney Island is finally emerging from the dark days and moving into a new chapter.  I had hoped that Dreamland Roller Rink would continue to contribute to the redevelopment of Coney Island and remain part of this renaissance.

Despite the distinct hopefulness in the air, the balance between the old Coney Island and the new Coney Island is wavering disconcertingly.  I am so thrilled to once again be back in my boardwalk shop after being kicked out in 2008.  However, this too may be temporary.   All of the City’s tenants have been given a one year lease.  At the end of this year, The owners of Luna Park, will decide whether or not they would like to keep Lola Star, Shoot the Freak, Ruby’s, Cha Cha’s and the other businesses as their tenants.  Although we are the ones who have made the Coney Island of today the wonderful place that it is, it is still very uncertain whether we will be able to continue to contribute to the fantastical landscape of Coney Island in the future.  As you can see from the roller coaster ride my business has taken, it is difficult to survive in the turbulent entrepreneurial waters of Coney Island with no stability or assurance that my business will be able to continue.

I want to find a place to grow a solid business.  I want to build a bigger, more fabulous rink with a huge wooden skating floor, glamorous bathrooms, a cute snack bar, and a rockin’ skate boutique in a space which can be open year round. I am searching all around Brooklyn for a new home for Dreamland Roller Rink.   I would greatly appreciate any suggestions about spaces; if you would like to collaborate or invest in making this dream a reality, please contact me.

I am so tremendously proud of the fabulous place that Dreamland Roller Rink was.  It’s magic amazes me every single time I walked through the door.  I had some of the most incredible roller skating times and met some of the most incredible people in this space.   I deeply cherish that experience.  Thank you to everyone who made the dream of Dreamland Roller Rink a reality.   It truly was the most magical place in which I’ve ever set foot (or skate!).

I will miss all of  Dreamland Roller Rink’s fabulous skaters so much.  Please visit me at my fabulous Lola Star Souvenir Boutique on the boardwalk, and at my brand new Lola Star Surf Shop on Surf Ave inside the Stilwell Ave Subway Station in Coney Island.

Please sign up for our email list to receive notifications about the opening of our new Rink and the exciting Roller Skating parties we will be throwing in various bars and rinks across the country until then!

Again, I am very, very sorry to disappoint you with this news.  Hopefully this is not the end, but a new beginning for Dreamland Roller Rink!

Love,

Lola Star
